When fresh is required

New Gaylord boxes

Sometimes only a first-run box will do — food-grade contact, export certification, tight specs, guaranteed uniformity. When that is you, we build it right and right-size it to cut waste.

The short answer

A new Gaylord box is a first-run, never-used bulk container built to your exact spec. You want new when contact purity, export compliance or dimensional precision are non-negotiable — food and pharma, ISPM export, and automated fill lines being the classic cases. For everything else, honestly, we'll point you to used Gaylords: greener, cheaper, and usually more than strong enough.

The decision

When new is the right call

New costs more and carries more embodied energy, so we only recommend it when the job genuinely requires it.

Use caseWhy new wins
Food & pharma contactVirgin, food-grade liner with full traceability and no prior contents
Export / ISPM shippingConsistent, certifiable board that clears customs and survives ocean freight
Spec-critical linesExact ECT, size and print tolerance for automated fill and OEM programs
Guaranteed uniformityEvery box identical, square and dust-free — no grade variation at all
The scenarios in full

Five times new genuinely wins

These are the jobs where first-run board is not an upsell — it is the requirement. If you recognize your operation here, new is the honest answer.

01

Food-grade & contact-sensitive

Produce, powders, ingredients and pharma cannot ride in a box with unknown prior contents. New gives you a virgin, food-grade liner with documented traceability — no residue, no odor, no cross-contamination risk. When an auditor or a QA spec is in the room, first-run board is the only defensible answer.

02

Export & ISPM-15 context

Ocean freight punishes weak or inconsistent board, and customs punishes paperwork gaps. ISPM-15 governs the wood pallet under the load, but the box itself still has to be uniform, certifiable and strong enough for weeks of humidity and stacking. New board gives you that consistency shipment after shipment.

03

Spec-critical & automated fill

Automated fillers, formers and palletizers assume every box is dimensionally identical. A used lot varies by a fraction here and there; an automation line reads that as a jam. New runs hold exact ECT, size and squareness, so the equipment keeps moving.

04

Cleanroom & controlled environments

Electronics, medical devices and lab supply chains often exclude used fiber outright to keep particulate and contamination down. A first-run, dust-free box that has never been opened is frequently a hard requirement, not a preference.

05

Brand-facing & retail-ready

When the box is part of the unboxing — retail bulk displays, club-store packs, DTC bulk — it has to look flawless and can carry custom print and die-cuts. New board takes ink cleanly and shows up square and unblemished at the receiver.

Not in this list? Then you probably don't need new. Nine times out of ten a graded used Gaylord does the same job for less money and far less carbon — and we'll tell you so.

Wall grades for new boxes

The wall sets the strength. Match it to the load — over-building wastes fiber, so we spec the lightest wall that safely does the job.

WallTypical capacityBest for
Single-wallUp to ~500 lb staticLight, dry, one-trip loads where cost is king
Double-wall~500–1,500 lb staticGeneral bulk, medium-density product, some reuse
Triple-wall1,500 lb+ staticHeavy, dense, export or multi-trip reusable loads

Logistics

MOQs and lead times

New is a manufactured product, so it runs on production math — plan ahead and you get the best price.

Minimum order quantity

New runs typically start around a pallet quantity and scale by the truckload. Larger runs lower your per-box cost. Send your volume and we’ll confirm the MOQ for your exact spec.

Lead time

Stock sizes can ship quickly; custom sizes, print or food-grade liners generally run one to three weeks depending on the plant queue. We confirm firm dates on your quote.

Right-sizing

We tune length, width and height to your actual product so you buy less board, ship more per truck and generate less waste — savings and sustainability in one move.

Still sustainable

New boxes are 100% recyclable — and reusable

Choosing new does not mean choosing waste. Every box we build is fully recyclable corrugated, and a well-cared-for triple-wall unit can run many trips before it retires.

  • Corrugated is one of the most recovered materials in the country.
  • When your new boxes finish their first life, our sell program buys them back into graded stock.
  • Worn-out board becomes upcycled goods — nothing gets landfilled on our watch.

Greener alternative

If your load does not truly need first-run board, used almost always wins on both cost and carbon. It is the same box, one life earlier, at a fraction of the footprint.

Head to head

New vs. used, line by line

The honest comparison. New wins where purity, precision and compliance matter; used wins almost everywhere else on cost and carbon.

Questions

New Gaylord FAQs

Can you match an existing box we already run?
Yes. Send a sample or the full spec — size, wall, ECT, liner, print — and we reproduce it, or improve it if we spot a way to cut material without losing strength.
Do you offer food-grade and export-certified board?
We do. Food-contact liners with traceability and ISPM-friendly board for export are both available — tell us the compliance requirement up front.
Should I really buy new?
Only if the load demands it. We will tell you honestly when used will do the job for less — that candor is why customers come back.
Can you print or brand the boxes?
Yes, custom print and die-cuts are available on new runs. Larger quantities make custom tooling far more economical.
How small a run will you take?
Plain custom sizes usually start around a pallet quantity; stock sizes can go lower. Print and die-cut runs want more volume so the tooling amortizes. Send your quantity and we'll confirm the MOQ for your exact spec.
Do you buy the boxes back when we're done?
Yes. When your new boxes finish their first life, our sell program buys them into graded stock, and worn board becomes upcycled goods. Nothing gets landfilled.
